The Verdict
The easiest entry point, if budget is the priority
The BOXIO composting toilet is a compact model in Eurobox format.
The BOXIO composting toilet is a compact model in Eurobox format. With a height of 28 cm (11.0 in), a depth of 40 cm (15.7 in), and a width of 30 cm (11.8 in), it stows and transports easily. It weighs 2.8 kg (6.2 lb), making it one of the lighter models. The solids and urine containers each hold 5 liters (1.3 gal), which in practice corresponds to about eight to ten toilet uses.
Assembly
The composting toilet consists of a classic Eurobox with an integrated urine diverter, lid, and two containers for urine and solids. Handling is very simple: the solids container is fitted with compostable bags, and the urine canister can be sealed leak-proof and then emptied easily. We found it practical that the BOXIO is delivered ready to use immediately. However, accessories such as the TOILET UP seat riser, bedding material, or a plug for the urine canister must be ordered separately.
Material and workmanship
The BOXIO is made from recycled plastic, which we'd like to highlight positively. At the same time, however, we noticed during testing that the workmanship of the urine diverter doesn't feel entirely convincing. Here the material gives a less sturdy impression, which could lead to limitations in the long run. Overall, the BOXIO is easy to maintain and quick to clean, though there's still room for improvement in terms of workmanship.
Comfort
In terms of seating comfort, the BOXIO shows its function as a mobile solution. The seat height is very low, so that sitting for longer periods can become uncomfortable. But for on the road, in a van, or on a boat, the comfort level is entirely sufficient. We found it pleasant that, thanks to its low weight and compact dimensions, the toilet is really easy to take along. Anyone needing more seat height can turn to the aforementioned TOILET UP accessory box.
Odor development
Used with bedding material and bags, we couldn't detect any notable odor development in our test. The urine canister is tight and empties without any problems. Toilet paper can also be disposed of easily along with the solids container or household waste. Here the BOXIO does a solid job, without any major weaknesses.
Value for money
At a price of 159.90 €, the BOXIO falls into the mid-range. Given the recycled plastic material and lightweight construction, that's quite fair. At the same time, though, it should be kept in mind that the workmanship isn't fully convincing. For occasional use or as a particularly mobile solution, however, the value for money is fine.
Our conclusion
The BOXIO composting toilet is lightweight, handy, and a practical option for on the road. It reliably fulfills its purpose and scores points with an environmentally friendly approach through recycled materials and compostable bags. However, we were less convinced by the workmanship of the urine diverter, and seating comfort is limited without accessories. Overall, the BOXIO is a functional but rather basic solution that's entirely sufficient for occasional use.
In a direct Eurobox comparison, though, it's noticeable that the very similar BilaBox is already available at a lower price. This makes the BOXIO somewhat less attractive, even though it does its job properly.
