Kildwick MicroLoo

The MicroLoo is the smallest composting toilet from Kildwick and, like many models, is available either as a kit or already fully pre-assembled. We took a look at the pre-assembled version of the toilet for you and put it through a thorough examination.

The Verdict

Kildwick's smallest, at a price that isn't

With a height of just 34 cm (13.4 in), the MicroLoo is the lowest model in Kildwick's portfolio, making it Kildwick's most compact composting toilet.

With a height of just 34 cm (13.4 in), the MicroLoo is the lowest model in Kildwick's portfolio, making it Kildwick's most compact composting toilet. Width (34 cm (13.4 in)) and depth (38 cm (15.0 in)), however, exactly match those of the MiniLoo, so it doesn't differ in its side footprint. At 8 kg (17.6 lb) of net weight (8.60 kg (19.0 lb) shipping weight), it's very light and thus ideal for mobile use, for example in a camper or van.

As with the MiniLoo, we deliberately chose the pre-assembled variant, since the assembly of all Kildwick kits is identical, and we already thoroughly tested the assembly of the EasyLoo. The pre-assembled MicroLoo costs 459.90 €; alternatively, the kit is available for 319.90 €.

Assembly

Thanks to the pre-assembled version, gluing and sanding are eliminated. Here you only need to place the 5-liter (1.3 gal) urine canister and the 5.5-liter (1.5 gal) solids bucket in their designated spots and line the latter with a matching inlay. Tip: be sure to think about bedding material and inlays when ordering, as these aren't included in the package.

Anyone who's handy and prefers to screw things together themselves can go for the kit, though assembling any of Kildwick's kits requires a fair bit of work. Laser-cut wooden parts need to be glued, nailed, and sanded. We'd advise anyone who doesn't want to plan for extended workshop time to go for the pre-assembled version.

Material and workmanship

The housing is made of 8 mm (0.3 in) thick, untreated birch plywood; the seat is 15 mm (0.6 in) thick and lacquered. Overall, the wood feels reasonably good quality. In particular, the fact that it's not sourced regionally is somewhat disappointing for a provider of sustainable sanitation solutions. At 8 mm (0.3 in), the wall thickness is even thinner than the EasyLoo and MiniLoo (9 mm (0.4 in) each), making the overall construction feel noticeably wobblier. In general, we consider wood to be rather suboptimal for mobile toilets: a weatherproof plastic housing would be more durable here and also usable in wet rooms.

Comfort

With a seat height of just 34 cm (13.4 in), you go quite low with the MicroLoo, which, while anatomically helping bowel movement, isn't very comfortable. Unlike models such as the Boxio Up or TROBOLO WandaGO, there's no height adjustment, so older users or those with limited mobility could have trouble here. On the plus side: the narrower build (34 cm (13.4 in) width) doesn't noticeably limit legroom and, thanks to the compact dimensions, allows for easy storage while still providing a comfortable sitting position.

A clear point of criticism is the so-called toilet seat, a term that's almost misleading here. In fact, it's a loose toilet seat ring held in position only by magnets, while the actual closure is provided by a hinged box lid. In a direct comparison, the EasyLoo's solution feels not only more thoughtful and comfortable, but also comes in at a cheaper price.

Odor development

Like all composting toilets, the MicroLoo relies on the proven separation of liquid and solid waste, which is very low-odor in normal operation. For additional odor control, we recommend bedding material, e.g. humus bricks or miscanthus bedding, with the former giving a noticeably better result in our tests. Unlike the EasyLoo and MiniLoo, no exhaust system can be retrofitted here. Since most users are likely to use the MicroLoo mobile, though, we don't see the lack of ventilation as a major drawback.

Value for money

At 319.90 € for the kit and a hefty 459.90 € for the pre-assembled variant, the MicroLoo sits in the upper price range for mobile composting toilets. Especially considering the wood's thin material gauge, there are certainly cheaper and better-crafted alternatives on the market.

If you're not handy or don't feel like gluing and hammering, in our opinion you're simply paying too much for the factory-assembled variant.

Our conclusion

The Kildwick MicroLoo scores points with its low profile and ultra-compact dimensions. For portable use, for example in campers or small vans, it's an interesting choice thanks to its low weight and precise fit. However, thin wood, limited comfort features, and the comparatively high price dampen the overall impression.

Anyone looking for a permanent, comfortable solution will find better and cheaper plastic models on the market. But anyone needing an eco-friendly, space-saving emergency toilet in their vehicle and willing to pay for a wood-look design will not be disappointed by the MicroLoo.

Category Scores

Where it earns its price, and where it doesn't

Four criteria drawn from the testing notes and manufacturer specs above, scored out of 10.

  1. Capacity between empties 6.0/10

5.5 liters (1.5 gal) for solids and 5 liters (1.3 gal) for liquids: compact but enough for occasional mobile use.

  2. Build and materials 5.4/10

Thin 8mm (0.3 in) birch plywood that feels noticeably less sturdy than Kildwick's other models, plus wood that isn't sourced regionally.

  3. Portability 8.4/10

Kildwick's lightest and most compact model at 8 kg (17.6 lb), well suited to tight camper installs.

  4. Value for money 5.8/10

The 319.90 euro kit needs real DIY skill, and the 459.90 euro pre-assembled option is steep for the thin material gauge.
