The Verdict

A well-thought-out wooden kit, if you don't mind assembling it

The TROBOLO TeraBloem is a composting toilet kit made entirely of high-quality wood.

The TROBOLO TeraBloem is a composting toilet kit made entirely of high-quality wood. It is available in three variants: the TeraBloem Lite for 319 €, the regular TeraBloem for 359 €, and the larger TeraBloem Plus for 419 €. All models can be individually extended with various exhaust systems.

The Lite version of the TeraBloem omits the toilet seat ring, making it more minimalist and somewhat sparser in feel. The Plus version, on the other hand, offers double the volume for solids and a larger footprint. In our test, we reviewed the standard variant of the TeraBloem at a price of 359 € for you.

Assembly

Assembling the TROBOLO TeraBloem proved to be pleasantly straightforward during testing. Unlike many other kits, no additional tools, nails, glue, or sandpaper are required. All parts are precisely pre-fabricated and assembled with screws, and a matching screwdriver is included. The instructions are logically structured, clearly illustrated, and well organized. Assembly took around 20 minutes and went absolutely smoothly. Overall, the assembly leaves a very well-thought-out and user-friendly impression.

Material and workmanship

The materials used deserve special praise. The toilet's housing is made from 15 mm (0.6 in) thick multi-layer birch and alder wood. As a result, the construction feels not only high-quality but also sturdy and durable. We don't see it as a drawback that TROBOLO delivers the wood untreated, quite the opposite: users have the opportunity to oil or varnish the toilet according to their own preferences.

In our test we used the natural oil set recommended by TROBOLO, which gives the wood a matte, pleasant look and effectively protects the surface. After a short time, it developed a beautiful, natural sheen that highlights the high-quality wood grain.

It's also worth noting positively that the toilet seat has already been varnished multiple times and requires no further treatment. The tested load capacity of up to 200 kg (440.9 lb) further speaks for the quality of the workmanship.

Comfort

With a seat height of 506 mm (19.9 in), the TROBOLO TeraBloem is on par with classic household toilets. The seating comfort is good, the sturdy toilet seat feels high-quality and offers secure support. Emptying the containers is pleasingly simple: the entire seat, together with the urine diverter, can be flipped up, giving easy access to the urine and solids containers.

A minor criticism concerns the urine container, which is delivered in a transparent design. An opaque version would be desirable, especially for discreet use in public spaces. Nevertheless, handling remains very user-friendly here as well.

Odor development

As with all well-functioning composting toilets, odor development with the TeraBloem is also very low. The wood shavings included, which according to the manufacturer are a byproduct of manufacturing the wooden toilets, contribute significantly to binding odors. They are not only sustainable but also, thanks to the natural essential oils in the wood, smell pleasantly fresh and bind moisture really excellently.

Anyone wanting to further optimize odor reduction can choose from three exhaust systems. The natural exhaust system uses the chimney effect and requires no electricity at all. It's easy to install and costs 44.90 €. Even more effective is the electric exhaust system for 89.90 €, which operates with an extremely low power consumption of 1.3 W and is barely audible during continuous operation. It comes with both a mains plug and a USB connection, making it suitable for power bank operation too. Installation is very simple: the small wooden housing with the fan is screwed in on the inside and vented outside through a standard 50 mm (2.0 in) pipe.

Anyone who prefers vertical venting or wants even better odor neutralization can also purchase the electric exhaust system as a set with extension pipes for 119.90 €.

The biggest innovation, however, is the SafeShell System, available only from TROBOLO. A membrane in the lid of the urine container only opens on contact with liquid and then closes again on its own. This optimally protects the urine canister against odors and leaks, a clear advantage over other composting toilets we've tested.

Value for money

At 359 €, the TROBOLO TeraBloem is priced above the cheapest models on the market. But these are often only cheaper at first glance. Kildwick, for example, offers kits from 269.90 €, but the material there is made from noticeably thinner wood, which also had a negative effect on assembly. A comparable wall thickness and high-quality workmanship like TROBOLO's is currently only offered by the FancyLoo, but this starts at 839.90 €.

With the TeraBloem, TROBOLO has created a kit that stands out clearly from the competition through quality, ease of handling, and well-thought-out technical details. Relative to what's offered, the price is absolutely fair.

Our conclusion

The TROBOLO TeraBloem impresses with its excellent workmanship, easy assembly, well-thought-out odor control, and high practical usability. In particular, the SafeShell System and the flexible exhaust solutions set new standards in this price range.

Overall, the TeraBloem offers a great overall package, but there is a small point deduction since there are cheaper and more compact alternatives out there.

If you're rather looking for a more compact and mobile model, TROBOLO also has you well covered here with models such as the WandaGO or the BilaBox.

Category Scores

Where it earns its price, and where it doesn't

Four criteria drawn from the testing notes and manufacturer specs above, scored out of 10.

  1. Capacity between empties 8.4/10

11 liters (2.9 gal) for solids and 10 for liquids, generous headroom for a stationary bathroom setup.

  2. Build and materials 9.6/10

15mm (0.6 in) multi-layer birch and alder wood rated to 200 kg (440.9 lb), the most solidly built kit in this comparison.

  3. Portability 6.2/10

At 15.3 kg (33.7 lb) and built for a fixed spot, less suited to frequent repositioning than TROBOLO's mobile models.

  4. Value for money 9.4/10

359 euros for genuinely premium wood and the SafeShell odor system, a fair price for what's included.
